Our patriotic Journey to the Moon commemorative bill celebrates the successful landing of an American astronaut on the Moon. The Apollo Program was NASA's moon-landing project of the 1960s and 1970s. The Apollo spacecraft was supplied with its own low-powered rockets, which could brake on approach to the moon and go into lunar orbit around the moon. Part of the spacecraft, the lunar module, could also be released, with its own rocket power, to land astronauts on the moon, and return them to the lunar orbiter. In July 1969, Apollo 11, with Commander Neil A. Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins, and Lunar Module Pilot Edward E. Aldrin, Jr. aboard, blasted off for the moon. On July 19, 1969, after landing at Tranquility Bay on the Moon's surface, Armstrong became the first person to set foot on the Moon. The last of the Apollo flights, Apollo 17, took place in 1972.
