Our Endangered Manatee bill is our One Million Dollar bill that celebrates the beauty of manatees, the Sirenian aquatic mammals that have paddle-like front flippers and a horizontally flattened tail, and are found in the warm coastal waters of Florida, northern South America, West Africa, and the Caribbean. As vegetarians, manatees use their flippers and flexible lips to pull plants toward their mouths. A large manatee can eat up to 200 pounds of water hyacinths and sea grass daily. As mammals, slow moving manatees must surface to breathe air, where collisions with watercraft and cuts from boat propellers are responsible for more manatee deaths than any other known cause.
